RFS2 – Renewable Fuel Standard 2
The RFS2 (Renewable Fuel Standard 2) is the U.S. EPA regulatory program established under the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and the EISA of 2007. It sets mandatory minimum volumes of biofuels to be blended with gasoline and diesel to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and promote cleaner energy.

RFS2 – Renewable Fuel Standard 2
About the standard
RFS2 classifies biofuels into four main categories (total renewable fuel, biodiesel, advanced biofuel, and cellulosic biofuel), each with increasing annual targets to reach 36 billion gallons by 2022. The program requires fuels to meet greenhouse gas emissions reduction thresholds and subjects all producers/importers to a traceability system based on Renewable Identification Numbers (RINs).
Benefits of Certification under RFS2
-
Access to markets with full compliance with U.S. biofuel obligations.
-
Generation of RINs, enabling accreditation, credit trading, or national compliance.
-
Improved transparency and documentation structure across production and logistics systems.
Requirements to Apply
The operator must be registered with the EPA, maintain production/importation records of biofuels, have documented traceability systems, and meet emissions reduction thresholds per category. Additionally, annual audits are required to ensure compliance and proper RIN generation.
Why Choose Control Union?
Since 2013, we have been a strategic partner in RFS2 audits, working with renewable fuel producers and operators for the U.S. and international markets. We have experience in technical verification systems, on-site audits, and support in EMTS (the EPA’s RIN transaction platform), ensuring compliance and technical robustness at every stage of the process.
